BL Collector's Edition

The BL Collector Edition is a carefully curated collection featuring only the special Harley-Davidson custom motorcycles created by BAD LAND. Transcending the concept of mass production, each bike represents a high-level fusion of design, technology, and philosophy. It is not merely a motorcycle used for transportation. It stands here as the artistic pinnacle of Harley-Davidson custom motorcycles—a single entity in which sculptural beauty, functional beauty, and the spirit of its creators have come together.

2003 FLHT BL Bagger Custom

In an era when bagger custom bikes competed to be as massive and over-the-top as possible, BAD LAND chose a thorough approach of “subtraction.” Based on a 2003 FLHT, they sculpted the bodywork from scratch without relying on any existing molds. Borrowing from popular styles while deconstructing conventional wisdom, this is BAD LAND’s unique take on bagger customization.

Amid a trend toward ever-greater scale, we chose to “subtract.”

This bike is based on a 2003 Harley-Davidson FLHT. The bagger custom trend, which was rapidly gaining momentum in the United States at the time, soon swept into Japan as well. Huge front wheels, massive saddlebags, and exaggerated body lines. Parts were added—and then added again—to make the bike look bigger, piling on volume and ornamentation. That was the methodology that defined bagger customs back then. However, the custom philosophy that BAD LAND has always upheld stands at the opposite end of the spectrum. Rather than relying on the addition of parts, we strip away unnecessary elements, streamline the lines, and refine the relationship between function and form. It is, in essence, an approach that draws out the bike’s inherent presence not through “addition,” but through “subtraction.” Originally, we had no intention of building a bagger simply to follow trends. But this project began in response to a strong request from an owner with whom we’d built a deep relationship of trust over many years—and his words, “I’ll leave it all up to you.” However, we had no intention of simply imitating the baggers that were popular in the U.S. at the time: being massive, being long, and intimidating through the sheer volume of plastic. Instead, we set out to present a bagger that only BAD LAND could create—one that differed from those approaches. That was the first challenge we set for this bike.

Sculpting from Scratch Without Using a Mold

Most of the exterior components that make up this vehicle are not simply a combination of off-the-shelf parts. Major body parts—including the front cowl, front spoiler, rear fenders, left and right saddlebags, and left and right side plates—were designed from scratch without adapting any existing molds. We created prototypes, refined the shapes, and molded each part individually from fiberglass while ensuring continuity with the vehicle body. The term “from scratch” here does not mean modifying existing parts to fit specific dimensions. It means determining everything—where a line begins, in which direction it flows, and where it converges—starting from a blank slate. In particular, the saddlebags and rear fender are not simply extensions of the rear section. They are designed so that curves originating from the center of the body pass under the seat and flow seamlessly into the rear section. Despite their large surface area, they do not appear visually heavy. Although they are long, they do not look clunky. To achieve this, we had to repeatedly adjust the curvature of the surfaces, the position of the edges, the left-right protrusions, and their relationship to the vehicle’s height. The FRP shaping process was extremely challenging, but it was through this iterative process that the silhouette unique to this vehicle was formed.

A bagger constructed from curves

While typical bagger custom bikes convey a sense of power through linear extensions and massive volumes, this bike creates a sense of speed and tension through a continuous series of curves. From the front fairing to the gas tank. From the gas tank to the seat. From the seat to the rear fender, and then to the rear edge of the saddlebags. Rather than existing as separate blocks, each part is arranged within a single, flowing line. When viewed head-on, the twin headlights and fairing give the bike a substantial, imposing appearance. However, when viewed from the side, the entire body stretches low from front to rear, revealing a silhouette that resembles a single, continuous stroke. This is not a bagger defined by excessive ornamentation. It is a bagger defined by the lines themselves that lie hidden within the black bodywork.

Completely one-of-a-kind parts by BAD LAND

The gas tank, front fender, exhaust system, and handlebars are all one-off creations by BAD LAND. Among these, the exhaust system is what most defines the bike’s character. Rather than following standard routing, the flow of the pipes emerging from the engine has been reconfigured to become an integral part of the bike’s body lines. The lines that spread widely to the left and right function not merely as an exhaust system, but as a structural element that adds tension to the center of the bike. The interplay between the curves of the exhaust and the exterior lines extending to the fuel tank, seat, and saddlebags blurs the boundary between the mechanical and bodywork components. This is not about turning functional parts into decoration; it is about transforming function itself into form. This embodies the philosophy of one-off craftsmanship that BAD LAND has pursued for many years.

Not the color black, but the structure of black

The body is predominantly black. However, this black is not merely meant to cover the vehicle monotonously. Glossy surfaces, subdued surfaces, the harsh reflections of metal, and the shadows cast by the engine and exhaust—by skillfully varying these textures, multiple shades are created within the black. Thin, sharp highlights run along the curved surfaces of the fairing and fuel tank when they catch the light. On the broad surfaces of the saddlebags, soft reflections emerge, rising slightly from the black. And behind them, the engine, frame, and piping recede into the background. Black is not a color that hides everything. It is a structure designed to make only the necessary lines stand out.

A Car That Defies Trends

Although this motorcycle is a bagger custom, it does not conform to the standard bagger custom style of that era. It was not built to compete for sheer size, nor was it built to show off the number of parts or the amount of decoration. It retains the necessary lines and eliminates the unnecessary ones. While featuring large bodywork, it maintains a restrained sense of volume. Although it makes extensive use of curves, it avoids any sense of frivolity. The goal was to harmonize these seemingly contradictory elements within a single motorcycle. The reason its design still doesn’t look dated, even years after its completion, is likely because it wasn’t designed based solely on the trends of the time.It embraces the trends of the era without being swallowed up by them. While borrowing the “bagger” form, it deconstructs the conventions of the bagger genre. This single machine is deeply imbued with the philosophy that BAD LAND has consistently upheld regarding the art of customization. This is not a bike built by simply piling on parts. It is a bike that has been carved, curated, and meticulously crafted—one that leaves a powerful presence even in silence.
